3 Ideas:

Idea 1  -

Synopsis: A Cambridge University professor creates an alter ego called ‘Holly’ after his parents ignored his insistence that he felt female. Now he disguises his murders under his ‘Holly’ persona because he blames the place for his gender (as it was where he was born as a male and not a female). Holly prepares for a day out, applying lipstick as she reminisces about her previous experiences with existence - the multiple murders she had committed over the years. Then shoots a teenage boy by the name of Joey, shaming a young male family member for liking “feminine” toys.

Style: (Colours, cinematography, Animation, Live Action) - Live Action. Emphasis on white for innocence. Red stilettos to represent imminent danger and blood. Beginning scene with Joey rather vivid with the graffiti until a mysterious phone call occurs when the colours seem to fade out.

Cinematography - Lots of close ups, avoiding Holly’s face, to emphasise the mystery of the serial killer and conceal the identity of “Holly”.

Form (Gore, psychological, Slasher, Cinema release, Online short?) - Slasher Horror. Limited Release in Cinemas, Netflix and Youtube (using the Youtube Red).

Character List:

Holly – birth name is Stephen. Born in Cambridge but raised in London. Is now the age of 42.  Had no siblings, only direct family was a mother and father. His parents ignored his insistence that he felt female, passing it as a phase. The pressure to be and act like a male when he felt otherwise and had the persona ‘Holly’ drove him over the edge. Stephen is employed at Cambridge University and is widely regarded in the studies of science, mostly chemistry. This is his occupation whenever he’s not playing with Holly, and it also makes him almost untouchable, as his position gives him a good reputation with some powerful people, and means his lack of presence wouldn’t go unnoticed were he to disappear.

Joey – 17 year old boy, born and raised in Cambridge. He was brought up roughly in Ditton Fields, a small estate known for raids and dodgy dealings. Brother to two younger girls and son to a single mother, he’s very protective of his family, and does all he can to take care of them.Friends and neighbours got him into a life of crime, and he now transports drugs around the city for a fee. Raised with only his mother to parent him, he’s not the most open-minded person when it comes to homosexuality and transgender.

Settings:

Bedroom - Acts as a peaceful kind of environment. Sets the audience up for a shock when images of past killings appear as it breaks mundane conventions.

Roundabout Underpass  - Relatively dark area on the street may build up suspense for the murder about to occur.

Costume:

Holly: As seen in the script, Holly wears a pair of red high heels and a white dress, however this can be compromised slightly depending on the actor.

Joey: This costume will need to represent more casual attire that is usually worn daily, so it will consist of perhaps a pair of jeans and a hoodie / jacket (anything that conceals the character’s face slightly to make him appear more shady).

Props - Mobile Phone, Fake gun, umbrella, lipstick, baseball bat, picture of young boy of some descript,

Idea 2:

Synopsis:

Claire is a social awkward sociopathic serial killer with no remorse who anyone. The scene opens with Claire walking through a dark and dirty corridor. The corridor has full bin bags stacked up the walls leaving a narrow passage for Claire. She is wearing a big, thick coat that is covering most of her body so the audience can’t see much of her.

As claire reaches the end of the corridor, she walks through a door and goes to sit on the sofa. The audience is given a wide view of her sitting in between the rotting corpse of her two dead parents either side of her. Completely emotionlessly, she turns on the TV and begins watching. The story would then continue to show flashbacks that explain the situation and what happens to her victims and their families.

Style:

Live Action. The cinematography would feature sharp, stiff movements that would give the shots a greater activity or dynamic. The colours would contrast this; featuring dull greys and greens where possible.

Form:

Psychological Horror. Limited Release in Cinemas, Netflix and Youtube (using the Youtube Red).

Idea 3:

Synopsis:

The film opens with an establishing shot of a large house a forest stretching beyond the visible range. It was dark and a quiet, the only sound is a distant howling of an owl. The house belongs to Jasmine Sigil, a corrupt businesswoman who specialises in computer security. Despite the lawyers protecting her, she has been secretly hacking company of all kinds to make them think they need her security and then charging them into bankruptcy. Jasmine is an elderly single women without family or friends, her whole life revolves around her work and she doesn't have time for meaningless things like companionship.

As she is preparing a meal for herself to eat as she works, she hears a noise outside. Being her arrogant self, she just brushes the unintelligible noise off as nothing. It was until she sat down that the noises started again and become more clear. It sounds like like a young female voice crying her help. Angry that someone is trespassing in her forest, she grabs a torch and follows the voice deep in the dark forest. The cries lead her deeper and deeper until she can’t see her house anymore before abruptly silencing. Jasmine decides to give up and go home back as soon as turns around she is met with a hard blow to the head. Dazed and trying to get up, Jasmine sees a large dark figure approaching her with a shovel in one hand. Jasmine begins to crawl away and gets her phone out to call the police. Just as she presses call the phone is hit out of her hand and the large figure raps his arms around the her throat. She feels him squishing hard and hard until she doesnt have enough air to speak. As this is happening, the police answer the phone and asks if everything is around. Disparately, Jasmine tries to scream to the phone but nothing comes out and she is forced watch the police hang out on her as she takes her last breathe.

The story then follows Jasmine Martyn, a very talented detective for is assigned to the case with her partner James. Jasmine makes great strides into finding out who the killer is and why they killed. However, the killer realises what’s going on and begins to kill off several people in the police department and people who could help with the case to cover his own tracks.

Style:

The film is a live action film. The colour scheme would change throughout the movie depending on which character is on-screen. For example, the opening scene shows two criminals so the colour is dark and dull (a lot of blacks and greys) whereas when the shot changes to show Jasmine Martyn for the first time, the colour becomes more bright to reflect her kind heart and dedication to her job. The cinematography of the film will follow a similar pattern. In scenes when a character feels trapped on in danger (like the opening) the camera will use a lot of close-ups and low angle shots whereas when a character is in no danger, the camera will use a lot wide angle shots. This is to reflect what the characters are thinking and feeling.

Form;

The film will focus most on the psychology of the killer and their victims. This would open a door for the audience to see the killer's point of view and make them question if they would do the same thing and if the killer is truly all bad. I think the film would have limited cinema releases but be pushed for its larger online release.

They arrive at the body. Jasmine Sigil was lying on her back with her arms and legs spread out like a star and her phone is placed perfectly on her chest. She has cuts on her knees and a lot of blood on her head from the shovel. There are also deep marks around her neck from the strangling.

Prop -

In the opening, the only props would be a torch, phone and a shovel. The setting would contain more props like cooking equipment and a laptop. After the opening, props like forensics and police equipment will become more common.

Setting -

The setting is a large empty house in front of a thick forest. This greatly fits within horror conventions that audiences of the horror genre have come to know and love.

Costume -

The costume will consist of main casual clothing like jeans a shirt. There are however some exception. The two detectives (Jasmine Martyn and James) will always be seen with a badge and and on some occasions will be scene with a gun a bullet proof vest. The main exception to the casual clothing would be the killer how will be first scene in all black and will be covering all of his skin.

1. ESTABLISHING SHOT: shot of Holly’s house (We’ll use Phoebe’s house) hold shot for five seconds.

2. WIDE MID SHOT: shot of Holly getting ready in somewhere that appears to be her room. The camera is at about waist level, hiding the characters face. Camera pans slowly from left to right (Holly also follows this movement, doing something to the left then moving to a mirror on the right). This movement reveals a damaged picture she was standing in front of on her desk.

3. Mise En Scene: Holly is wearing a white dress; either sitting down in a chair at a desk or leaning over a desk. On the left of the shot is a damaged picture of a little boy in a frame; and on her right is a mirror positioned on the desk. There's a vase with a fake flower in on the left of the frame, and there's spilled makeup on the desk. There's a song playing quietly in the background from a phone on the desk.

4. CLOSE UP: cut to a close up of the image. The camera is above it, looking down at it. We see the damage to the image, yet its been framed. Shot holds for about a second

5. EXTREME CLOSE UP: the camera cuts again, zoomed in on the face of the small boy/girl in the picture. Over this shot, the VO of Holly plays: “They didn’t give me a choice” shot holds for about three seconds.

6. MID SHOT: Shot of Holly bringing a baseball bat down on someone's shoulder. The camera is at eye level, and the person being murdered is cowering against a wall to the left of the shot. Shot last for a quarter second, as it's part of a small, quick edited montage of death.

7. Mise En Scene: a baseball bat would be needed. The outfits could really be anything semi-normal. A stock actor would be needed for this.

8. MID SHOT: a stock actor running away from the camera.

9. CLOSE UP: of the previous stock actors face, panicking

10. EXTREME CLOSE UP: a gun being fired. The shot would be from the guns left side, with only the barrel and the top of the gun in shot (no hand in shot). The background is plain.
11. Mise En Scene: a BB gun that looks semi-realistic.

12. CLOSE UP: the mirror in the bedroom from the second shot. It shows Holly’s lower lips having red lipstick applied. The shot only shows her lips and lower face. This shot lasts about 2 seconds.

13. About a second of black screen, with Holly’s VO: “So I won’t give them one”.

14. ESTABLISHING SHOT: a shot of the roundabout on scene in Cambridge. Cars can be seen driving past, and can be heard.

15. WIDE SHOT: Holly is seen moving down the road towards one of the stairs leading down to the tunnels in the roundabouts. Her white dress sticks out against the dull cityscape. She’s in centre shot. The camera is on the pavement, looking down the pavement at Holly as she walks away from the camera. Shot would last about 2 seconds.

16. Mise En Scene: white dress, red heels, umbrella (held in Holly’s right hand)

17. EXTREME CLOSE UP: we see Holly and her high heels going down some stairs. The shot is from the left side of her, and only her shoes and part of her ankle is visible. The camera doesn't move, and Holly moves off of shot from right to left. Behind her, it would be ideal to see some graffiti to highlight the seedy nature of the city, but it's not necessary.

WIDE SHOT: we see the base of the stairs and most of it, looking up. We see the high heels begin to come down the stairs, but the camera pans before Holly is revealed in full.The camera pans to the left to reveal someone walking down a tunnel opposite the one Holly is about to enter, towards the camera. He’s not that far in; . He’s holding a phone to his head, is hunched over slightly, and is wearing a baggy hoodie of some description. The colour pallet used here should be blues and blacks, with (likely Joeys) hair covered to not interfere with this. Joey is walking reasonably fast (but not too much to make it so that he gets a fair way into the tunnel; this tunnel will be used quite a bit)

Mise En Scene: Evan, a hoodie and a phone. An umbrella, heels and a white dress for Holly.

18. MID SHOT: Joey is moving from the right of the screen to the left as he passes the camera in the tunnel. He’s looking forward, and the phone is in his left hand, visible to the audience. We can hear him saying “Get it ready at four. (slight pause) Well you tell him that!”. The whole thing doesn't need to be audible, just enough to get the general idea.

19. WIDE SHOT: Joey stops walking down the tunnel, now a fair ways down. He’s on the left half of the screen. On the right third, we see the wall to the entrance of the tunnel. Joey is audible half-muttering half-shouting (his volume can be adjusted based off of how echo-y the tunnel is; it needs to be audible to the camera) “He’ll kill me if it's late!”. When he does this, his phone leaves the left half of his head so he can more effectively shout into the microphone. High heels step up near the threshold to the opposite tunnel, then stop. This is simultaneous to Joey shouting; which is why Holly stops walking.

20. CLOSE UP: we have an over-the-shoulder shot of Joeys left shoulder. He still has his phone in his left hand to his ear, and he’s still not walking. We hear him say “Four is the deadline, got it?” into the receiver. A pause of about half a second, in which Joey may attempt to sigh convincingly. “Anyway, how’s Aaron”. These last three words are said calmer than the rest, with none of the signs of distress the rest of the audio had.

21. WIDE SHOT: the camera is facing Joey's left side, against the wall opposite of the one Joey is walking against. We hear him say “Nah, get him some kinda action figure or somethin. None of that girly stuff”. He then hangs up, pockets his phone, and walks out of shot to the left side of the shot.

22. CLOSE UP: as the camera changes, we hear the sound of the heel of a high-heeled shoe against concrete echo down the tunnel. The shot is of the left side of Joey, with only the head and shoulders visible. He stops walking (the shot doesn’t show him walking per se, just signs that he has just stopped walking) and after about half a second, and risks a look behind him.

23. EXTREME WIDE SHOT: the camera is on the ground, facing Joey, looking back down the tunnel. We see the wall on the right side, with evan walking against the left wall of the shot. We see down the tunnel that no-one is there. The audio is but the faint whirring of cars above. The shot is held for about a second as Joey realises this isn’t where the sound came from.

24. CLOSE UP: the camera cuts back to the previous angle (with evans head in centre shot). We see him turn his head back around and continue walking, going off of the left edge of the shot. This shot holds about 1.5 seconds after Joey leaves it. When the camera changes next, the same heel sound is heard. At this point, he’s just outside of the tunnel.

25. MID SHOT: the shot is of the torso and above of Joey viewed from behind. Like an over the shoulder shot that took a few steps back. He stiffens visibly, and turns his head slightly to the left, toward the nearby tunnel.

26. POV SHOT: we see Joey looking to the left of the plaza, between the two entrances. He looks left, then to the right with quick, sharp movements. He stares for about two seconds.

27. MID SHOT: the shot is the same as the one before the POV shot. Joey looks towards the camera for a second, then turns and speed-walks away. The shot holds on him walking away for about two seconds. He’s in the plaza now, having travelled about a third across it.

28. EXTREME WIDE SHOT: the shot is from across the plaza; looking towards the tunnel Joey is in. He looks left, then right, then speed walks forward across the plaza. Someone walks in front of the camera as he looks left, obscuring him from view. Once Joey moves forward, the camera follows his movements slightly. The camera is to the right of the opposite tunnel in the plaza, appearing to the left of Joey

29. WIDE SHOT: the exact same shot as the previous one, but after the camera has been zoomed in on Joey a fair bit. These two would be edited together to make the shot more dynamic.

30. WIDE SHOT: the camera is behind Joey by about three meters and to the left of him. His phone rings audibly, and he stops walking, takes it out and answers it.

31. CLOSE UP: shot is facing Joey, with the camera positioned about 1 meter away 70 degrees to the left of where he’s facing. He turns towards the left, into the phone when he talks. “Hello? Who is this?” a pause “Gary, is that you? Gary?” (If i can get ahold of a shoulder mount for the camera and it isn’t too shaky during testing, I would use this to circle slowly around Joey’s left side. Joey hangs up.

32. EXTREME CLOSE UP: Joey putting his phone in his left hoodie pocket. It only shows his hand and the pocket in shot.

33. MID SHOT: low angle, at around ankle level. Joey begins to walk off, but then his phone rings again. He takes it out of his pocket and looks down at it. The shot is from behind him, about 150 degrees from the way he’s facing (towards the opposite tunnel). He looks confused.

34. CLOSE UP: the shot is on Joey's left side, 90 degrees from the way he’s facing. The audio is silent except for the sound of heeled shoes walking along slowly. His face is worried, panicked (this is the third time he’s heard heels, and he was paranoid before that, too).

35. LOW ANGLE MID SHOT: a shot from ground level looking up. Joey is seen throwing his head left and right. He turns around and looks all around him, searching. His movements are quick and panicked.

36. POV SHOT: the camera is looking around in quick, sharp movements. This is to be intercut with the previous shot, showing Joey from both a POV shot and a low angle shot looking around and panicking. Get this from a few different angles to give shots that could be quickly intercut

37. MID SHOT: the camera is positioned slightly to the left of where Joey is going, the tunnel he was walking to earlier. Its facing him, and is positioned a few meters back. We see him break into a slightly stumbling run.
    
38. POV SHOT: Joey gets into the opposite tunnel, his destination, running down it. The camera is behind him, a few steps back at first, but follows as he runs down the tunnel (no where near the same pace, however). Joey seems to trip, having felt some kind of impact on his back.

1. MID SHOT: the camera is positioned slightly to the left of where Joey is going, the tunnel he was walking to earlier. Its facing him, and is positioned a few meters back. We see him hit the ground as he falls. At the moment of impact, cut to black.

Feedback

• Make a synopsis for the entire film, expressing how the opening links in to this. Just a brief: this is what we’re doing. Not in much detail.

• How will we film. Note down locations, ideas for filming and where we will source props and our mise en scene.

• Add the already-done shot list (or a segment that links to the full thing, like we did with the script).

• Add the storyboard scan-ins in.

A) Dates and timescales

The movie is going to be released in between Halloween and Christmas, as not to be overshadowed by either. It will be shortly after Halloween, so that the releases on Halloween don’t make it seem less significant, and “Holly” stands out in the cinema.

The first trailer will be released a couple of months before the release of the movie to build up suspense for it, on the same day of the month (trailer: 10th of August, release: 10th of November) so that the release of the movie is simple and easy to remember. The second trailer will be published closer to the release, in October around Halloween, to remind the audience as the release date gets closer, and the style of the trailer (being a horror) will fit in around the holiday of Halloween and the other things running on popular media at the time.

The DVD release will be 3 months after the cinema showing of the movie, which is average for movies recently. A month after this, the movie will be available online, on full - paying streaming websites such as Youtube which requires a full payment for buying and renting, then it will be available a couple of months later for subscription sites like Netflix and Now TV. The time gaps between the releases will give a chance for the consumer to buy the full movie physically first, then pay for the full movie online, before allowing for cheaper alternatives.

D) Budget

Since the college will be supplying a lot of equipment like a camera and tripod, we will not be purchasing that many things.  However, there are a few props that will need to be shop bought. These props are: • White dress – Approximately £8.00 • Red high heel shoes – Approximately £7.00 These are the only things we will need to buy since we can supply other props like a phone and an umbrella from home. This means that we will only spend approximately £15 in total, which we will split equally between the group. If the college weren’t to supply the equipment then the price would be a lot higher. We would have to buy: • DSLR camera - £599.00 • Tripod - £19.99 • Camera mounted microphone - £81.95 • Shoulder mount action camera - £26.27 • Clip on microphone - £17.99 • Extra DSLR battery - £44.99 This is all the equipment we would need to film the horror opening. In total this would cost us £780.19 + postage. This is very obviously out of our price range, which is why we will be asking the college to supply the equipment since they already have it all and it won’t cost us anything.

E) Relevant legal and ethical issues

In terms of photo shoot, this might be in terms of misrepresentation, copyright, royalties

LEGAL

In terms of legal issues, these tends to be about who owns the rights to something, or whether you are slandering (saying something about someone that is not true), or sometimes it can be a legal issue of making sure your content is not breaking the law (as in there is no suffering to animals depicted)

ETHICAL

Ethics are more of a minefield and there are certain ethical considerations that we have in the west that are important to understand. Ethics is about what society views as right.

Such as – is there a balance between male/female genders

If there are,  are these stereotypical roles (eg powerful  and strong male, weak female often dressed provocatively)

Is there swearing, are there weapons?

South-park is controversial because a lot of people disapprove of its ethics. However, the producers might argue that it is for a small cult audience who are adult enough to know what is right and what is wrong.

ETHICAL

Portrayal of a transgender character being the villain	Although it’s not meant to be implied that this is true of all similar members of the LGBTQ community, another character in the movie, a friend of the main character later in the film, will also be transgender and have a much nicer characterisation.
Ethnicities	Choice of actors does not relate to ethnicity.
Violence	The age rating of the movie should mean that the viewers are old enough to understand that the violence isn’t real and is not completely justifiable in the context of the movie. In the opening, all violence is mostly concealed (the effects of it) , but definitely implied.
Gender	Although the two characters in the opening are both, sex - wise, male, the actors are a female and a male. The mostly male cast is later evened out by a female main character, after the opening.
